PhPBB: the best free forum?

Compared against all others? I don't really have any experience but i am going to use phpBB

i always choose phpbb although smf is suppose to be picking up, i recently contemplated using it hwoever my experience lies with phpbb so i thought id stick with it

I used phpBB on a lot of sites, but I have converted most of them to vBulletin as of late. vB is faster, more stable and more secure than phpBB. Plus it gives quite a bit more out of the box. I have to hack, tweak, patch and modify phpBB before it performs and looks how I want it. With vBulletin, very little of that is required.
